There was a time, when Thiruvananthapuram had a nickname that stuck like glue: “The Pensioner’s Paradise.”
The stereotype of a city going to sleep at 8 PM, and the only major employers being the Government Secretariat and other government establishments. Young graduates packed their bags for other major cities Mumbai, or the Gulf, convinced that their hometown had nothing to offer but quiet roads and a laid back lifestyle.
Then, in 1990, something happened that shifted the tectonic plates of Kerala’s economy. On a green hillock in Kazhakoottam, a vision was born.
This is the story of Technopark – India’s first electronic technology park, and how it turned a quiet capital into a booming tech powerhouse, all while staying lush, green, and distinctly “Trivandrum.”

The Visionary Beginning (1990)
It is hard to imagine now, but when the idea of Technopark was mooted in the late 80s, it was considered a gamble. India wasn’t an IT superpower yet. The internet was barely a concept for the masses.
Under the leadership of visionary Chief Minister E.K. Nayanar and the legendary technocrat K.P.P. Nambiar, Kerala decided to dream big. They didn’t just want a building; they wanted an ecosystem.
When the foundation stone was laid, Kazhakoottam was essentially a sleepy village on the outskirts. There were no 4-lane highways, no high-rises, and certainly no fancy food outlets. There was just ambition.

The Buildings That Became Icons
For the 90s kids and early techies, the names of the buildings in Phase 1 evoke instant nostalgia. They weren’t named like corporate blocks; they were named after rivers, grounding them in nature.
- Pamba & Periyar: The pioneers.
- Nila: The giant that became the face of the park for years.
- Bhavani & Tejaswini: The modern giants that followed.
By the time Infosys and UST built their own massive campuses, the world had taken notice. Trivandrum was no longer just a government city; it was a destination where global code was being written.

The “Greenest” IT Park in the World
Here is where Technopark differs from the concrete jungles of Bangalore or Gurgaon. Walk through the campus today, and what do you hear? the chirping of birds.
With over 40% of the land dedicated to greenery, Technopark feels less like an office park and more like a resort. It is perhaps the only place where techies take breaks to walk under a canopy of trees, or can stare out through the office windows or stand in the pantry balconies and just have a calming sight of nature. It proved that development doesn’t have to mean destruction.

How it Changed the “Trivandrum Lifestyle”
The impact of Technopark goes far beyond the code written inside its gates. It fundamentally altered the DNA of the city.
1. The Rise of “New Trivandrum” (Kazhakoottam) If you left the city in 2005 and returned today, you wouldn’t recognize Kazhakoottam. The “Bypass Road” has transformed into a neon-lit corridor of energy. Malls, luxury apartments, cafes, and fancy restaurants have sprung up to cater to the 70,000+ professionals working here. The city center has effectively expanded northwards.
2. The Cultural Shift Technopark brought in a cosmopolitan crowd. Suddenly, there was a demand for varied cuisines, late-night hangouts, and modern amenities. The “Teashop Discussions” shifted from local politics to AI and Blockchain. Yet, remarkably, the new residents adopted the Trivandrum pace – relaxed, friendly, and unhurried.
3. A Step Towards Reversing the Brain Drain For the first time, Malayalis didn’t have to leave. You could work for a Fortune 500 company, earn a global salary, and still go home to your parents in Karamana or Kowdiar for dinner. That work-life balance became Trivandrum’s biggest selling point.

The Future
The story isn’t over. With the rapid expansion of Technocity (Phase 4), the Taurus Downtown project, and the upcoming Quad, Trivandrum is gearing up for its next leap. We are talking about millions of square feet of new space, an AI-focused ecosystem, and a nightlife that is finally catching up with the workforce.
Technopark proved that Trivandrum could be modern without losing its tradition. It showed us that we could build the future while sitting in the lap of nature. Today, when a young graduate drives through the Technopark gates, they are walking into a legacy that changed the face of Kerala forever.
